(Sorry for the wait. A/N will explain)

Previously on Don’t Cry;

“Sheg Sheg… another woman don dey enter zanga ba?” BC said on the other end.

“BC it’s not—” Segun started, but was stopped.

“Don’t explain. Not my cup. Find out how far with your wife. When my boy gives me more info, I’ll let you know.”

Segun nodded even though BC couldn’t see. “Okay. Thank you, BC.”

“Don’t thank me just yet o. Remember that you’ll owe me.”

“Come… come and get me,” Lara said, then added. “Not at my house. After the junction. I’ll pack a bag and come meet you.”

“But what about—”

“Michael, I swear to you. There’s nothing else. Please… I beg you, I need you. Don’t fail me.”

There was a spell of silence before Michael sighed. “Okay. Okay. I’m moving out now, Lara.”

“Thank you,” she whispered as she ended the call.

Lara wondered if she was doing the right thing, and realized there was no right anymore. It was either bad or worse. A single tear went down her cheek as she entered the bedroom to pack a few clothes and valuables.

“Your girl seems to have finally lost her mind.”

He tensed up. “What did you ask her to do this time?”

The voice on the other end laughed. “Nothing. I was actually calling to congratulate her on behaving properly this time around, until she went ballistic and started asking me where she could kill herself just so I’d return her sweet little daughter back,” the voice laughed again.

He stayed silent for a spell. Was his Lara unravelling this much? Was that why… he had to figure out what was next.

“What’s the end game to this? What do you want her to do before we give little Barbara back?”

“What,” the voice sneered. “You’re worried about her?”

“Yes. I am. Barbara can’t keep taking these injections to make her sleep. It’s definitely bad for her health.”

“I see. The girl is none of my concern, and shouldn’t be yours. Your concern should be—”

“No! She is my concern. She’s a little girl that needs love and care and attention and—”

“Now you listen to me you despicable piece of trash,” the voice on the other end dripped with venom. “I brought you in on this to do a simple enough job. I don’t need you getting your head in the clouds. Do you understand me?”

There was no answer from him.

“I said… Do. You. Understand. Me?” the voice was cold.

“… Yes ma’am. I understand.”

“Good. Do anything stupid, and I’ll make sure that you regret it for the rest of your life.” And with that, the line went dead.

The man walked back into the room with little Barbara lying on the couch. She was still sleeping, but she would be up soon enough. He didn’t give her a large dose. He couldn’t bring himself to do so.

She looked so peaceful, like a miniature angel. The man sighed. Lara had learnt her lesson. It was time to end this all.

Several minutes later, little Barbara was lying in the back seat of his car as he sped off towards her home. Despite his initial doubts about everything, it looked like it was going to work out in the end. Lara’s call had made him see that to be the case. But what if she was faking it? What if she just wanted to use him again?

Nonsense, he chastised himself. She had finally opened her eyes. She had learned humility, and learned to appreciate what truly matters. They would be together like it had always supposed to be. Maybe little Barbara would follow them as well. She could learn to call him father if it came to it.

“Mm… daddy… where…” a sweet innocent voice said from the back. He looked at the rear-view mirror and saw Barbara stir.

“Ssh… it’s alright, lovely. Looks like the game of hide and seek is over. We’re going to see mummy now.”

Little Barbara rubbed her eyes. “Good. I don’t want to play anymore, Uncle Mike.”

“I know precious. We won, so you don’t have to play anymore.”

Next on Don’t Cry;

“Jesus… man… I’ve been with the board. I… I-I had no idea…” Chike whispered in shock.

Segun shook his head. “You have responsibilities, man. I get. I know you’d be here if the board didn’t require your presence.”

“Jesus, Segun. What the heck is going on? Has Lara said anything to you?”

Segun wanted to scoff but thought better of it. “Nothing. I’ve been calling her phone but she isn’t answering…”

“You should get to the house and meet her one on one, man. That’s the best approach at the moment. Figure out what’s going on, alright?” Chike advised. “I’ll cover for you, so get to it…”

Nothing was going to be the same again. Everything had changed. What about her daughter? Lara could only hope that Barbara was going to be alright. She had to believe that Barbara would be alright. And Segun would be as well. The two of them together would work… Barbara had always loved her father more than her mother. And Lara couldn’t blame her for that preference.

Foluso…

Foluso was dead. Lara prayed that Foluso was resting peacefully. She honestly didn’t deserve to go the way she did. Lara was a complete monster, taking out her frustrations like that. How would she face her daughter, teach her daughter things, knowing that she had taken the life of another human being? It wasn’t even in self-defence…

He parked the car by the side of the road, waiting for Lara to call him and tell him that she was close by. He was still trying to figure out what he was going to do about Barbara. He could say that he saw Barbara wandering about. There was no reason for her not to believe him. And he was certain that the drugs would make Barbara’s recollection wonky, so she wouldn’t be able to tell precisely what had happened. Her uncertainty would be enough to let Lara believe his own side of things…
